Pop Warner the nation’s oldest youth football organization has announced that it will eliminate the traditional three-point stance from its lowest three levels (Tiny Mite, Mighty Mite and Junior Pee Wee). “The concern is that this position lowers the heads, making them more likely to lead with their head and putting them in a more vulnerable position for head injury.” Starting this September players will now use a modified squat position with their hands on their legs.
The Football Safety Academy supports Pop Warner in this effort to make football a safer and better game. In addition the three-point stance is one of the most difficult skills to teach and at this young age many players can’t even figure out which is the proper hand to put down on the ground (note – player in picture on the left, wrong hand down). Now Pop Warner coaches can utilize the time to teach young players to make contact with their “head up” and properly use their hands to reduce unintentional helmet contact at the line off-scrimmage.
